Suppliers - Ice
Kuehne & Nagel

The V&A Cold Store Management Team have identified this growth opportunity in the quay side services to the fishing industry, which will enable the cold store to secure ancillary business from the vessel and boat owners thus growing our market share in the Port of Cape Town. The first phase of our planned investment is in order to service this initial demand through the installation of three, 27 tonne a day ice maker (24 hours) with a bunker holding capacity of 100 tonnes (internal dimensions are 12m long, 7m wide and 4,5m high). The bunker was built with the option to facilitate an additional icemaker with similar production capabilities; this will enable the cold store to increase its ice output capacity as the demand continues to increase.

The fast and efficient delivery of ice to the vessels is essential for us to ensure that our customers are able to get back to the harvest grounds with as little delay as possible, thus securing our quay side services an advantage over the other ice making facilities in the Port of Cape Town.

The management of the delivery / sale of the ice is computerised, a "smart card" is used allowing vessels to load 24 hours a day without human intervention, the only dependant being whether the plant would have sufficient ice stocks available. These cards can be used as either pr-paid amounts of an automatic invoicing system on delivery.
